Modern Mansion in City

An Open-Plan Oasis in Hong Kong

Inspired by the area and characteristics of a 1,900 square feet old building, Grande Development Limited reshaped the interiors of this apartment to create a contemporary and open-plan living space that stands out. By pulling down walls and wooden partitions, they transformed the previously unimpressive interiors into a spacious and functional oasis in the heart of the city.

To create a mansion-like place in the city, the apartment had to be filled with open living spaces. Grande Development Limited used transparent partitions and furniture to replace walls, effectively separating different areas while maintaining a sense of openness. The centerpiece of the apartment is the open kitchen with a three-meter-long bar table, perfect for family gatherings and entertaining friends. The dining table, adorned with three designer pendants, serves as the focal point of the apartment, seamlessly integrated with the open kitchen. The upper level is now clear and united, creating a highly serviceable and large entertaining area.

The design also incorporates a glass panel study room, allowing natural light to flow throughout the apartment and creating a spacious atmosphere. The large windows in the lower level serve as the main source of sunlight, while the use of two-sided display cabinets and a half-length clear glass partition enhances the sense of openness and allows light to penetrate both areas. The result is an apartment that feels expansive and inviting.

To increase the visual effect and extensity of the interior spaces, a French-made ceiling range hood from the brand Roblin was used in the open kitchen, replacing the traditional wall-mounted hood. This choice not only adds to the modern aesthetic but also maximizes the usable space in the kitchen.

Grande Development Limited conducted extensive research before starting the project, interviewing everyone who would be living in the apartment to understand their living practices, habits, and specific requirements. The biggest challenge was to create an open-plan living space that also offered enough privacy for each resident. By re-arranging the function rooms according to the needs of each individual, they were able to achieve a perfect balance.

The project took seven months to complete and is located at Sunpeace Court in Hong Kong. The design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016 for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity. It showcases the best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
